Microscope Slides

Microscope slides are thin, flat pieces of glass used to hold specimens for examination under microscopes. They provide a stable and transparent platform for viewing small objects at high magnification. Standard slides typically measure 25 x 75 mm and are about 1 mm thick, though variations exist depending on specific applications.

Several types of microscope slides are commonly used. Plain slides are the most basic type, serving as a general-purpose platform for mounting specimens. Frosted slides have a roughened edge that allows for easy labeling with a pencil or marker. Charged slides carry a positive charge that helps cells and tissue samples adhere more securely, making them particularly useful in histology and pathology. Concave slides feature one or more shallow depressions that hold liquid samples, preventing them from spreading too thin. Cover slips, which are thin pieces of glass or plastic placed over the specimen, are often used to protect the sample and enhance image clarity by reducing light refraction. Wet mount slides involve placing a specimen in a liquid medium, often with a cover slip, to keep it hydrated and in its natural state. Smear slides are used for spreading a thin layer of a sample, such as blood or bacteria, to facilitate detailed microscopic examination.
