Fume Hoods

What is a fume hood? A fume hood is a ventilated enclosure designed to protect lab workers from hazardous fumes, vapors, and chemicals. The structure typically has a transparent front panel that can be adjusted to allow access. Inside the hood, a ventilation system pulls air into the enclosure, which either filters or vents harmful substances outside, ensuring that they do not spread into the lab area. They are especially important for experiments involving volatile, toxic, or corrosive substances that could be dangerous to human health.

 

The main purpose of a fume hood is to protect laboratory workers by capturing and removing harmful gases or particles that could be inhaled. Many chemicals used in labs are toxic, carcinogenic, or irritating, and exposure to them can have serious health consequences. By using a fume hood, workers can handle these materials safely, minimizing their exposure to harmful substances. The fume hood helps maintain a secure workspace by preventing dangerous chemicals from mixing with the general air in the lab.
