Electrophoresis

Electrophoresis is a laboratory technique used to separate and analyze molecules, such as DNA, RNA, or proteins, based on their size, charge, and other physical properties. By applying an electric field to a gel matrix (such as agarose or polyacrylamide), charged molecules move through the gel at different rates—smaller molecules typically migrate faster than larger ones. This process allows researchers to isolate specific molecules from complex mixtures for further analysis, such as identifying genetic markers, determining protein size, or checking the purity of samples. Electrophoresis is widely used in molecular biology, biochemistry, and forensic science for tasks like gene sequencing, protein profiling, and diagnostic testing.

 

Electrophoresis equipment includes gel electrophoresis tanks, which house the gel and the buffer solution, and power supplies to generate the electric field. Agarose or polyacrylamide gels are prepared as the medium through which the samples move. For visualizing the separated molecules, staining agents are used, along with ultraviolet (UV) transilluminators or gel documentation systems to detect and analyze the results. Additionally, microplates or capillary electrophoresis systems are used in high-throughput applications or for more precise separations.
